Changing the face 2011. Pushkynski Cinema (Moscu)
"SWITCH ON BOX"
"SWITCH ON BOX"
APPROACH AND OBJECTIVES:
When we saw the old black and white photos of the
Pushkynski Cinema in his early years and we compared them with the current
situation we felt that it had not only lost
his elegant and stately character but that of his environment too. However
they had maintained the architectural invariants that would allow us to recover his value in
many different ways .
The way we decided to put it in value enhancing its original architectural settings was based on a world of movies, dreams, glazes, fades and transparencies, and on top of that its magical and surprising iconic character.
So we decided that Pushkynski Cinema should maintain the state of the vanguardism and glamour of his early days.
It should be stripped from the excess of ornament and should be in itself a cinematic icon.
We propose three guidelines coming together in this common goal: 1 –By making transparent and semi-transparent Boxes which protect the building by giving to it a strong unity .2-By means of meshses of LEDs that reflects the world of films and multimedia issues, 3-Building a volumetric and urban development unity’s in its immediate environment, like a virtual outdoor carpet which take us to the entrance of the building, and at the same time we aim to simplify and unify this environment.
The aim of sentry boxes glass should be seen like an elegant package that respects and essentially restores the original volume.
Between the double skin of glass, we place LED screens, which open to the outside by a tent getting to the top level starting from the ground floor. From now and then we enter into a world of cinematic dreams.
On the lower level of the existing building, we have recovered its original transparency. Also the access to the lower level is again possible, and a flooring extends as a carpet like forming a continuum to join to the park by their inferior level.
The resounding and unified volume will appear above and below the catwalk, like a light box, a magical illusions station such as a cinema, where the LEDs can be continously activated, either by night or day.
If the LEDs are not turned on it, then it will be perceived a game of transparent boxes and on the background, a somewhat ghostly image of the original building.
Stainless steel structures anchoring the double-skin curtain wall of optimal energy efficiency which extends around the perimeter in U, allowing an interior access for maintenance and replacement of LEDs in necessary case.
ENVIRONMENT:
In its urban scale it is a flashlight of cinema
dreams.
The immediate environment must be simplified in
order to amplify the carpet effect over the park and extend this glamour to an
urban scale , so the access environment
with its marquee permeable mesh fabric of leds, would allow to extend his carpet on the stairs to get to the
next level.
We resumed, although in an hypothetical way the
idea of the public access floor, as in the old glorious days. In a deeper study
of the functional needs would align business and leisure, but we intend to
enhance the iconic character and the volume, by joining the volumes from above
and below the bridge in one only shape. This other goal is to recover the strength and tension bygone of this
building.
GEOMETRY:
We evaluated the geometric qualities of the original building that we believed they should not be missed. Like this, there are references to Russian Constructivism, and for those reasons the building has to shed the excess of decorative and stay with the essential. That is what we incorporate to the semi-transparent volume,as well as the matiuska effect and the leds mesh which takes to the world of dreams, either embedded in glass skin (back), either into a tubular mesh structure which lead to the tent of main access of big stars, celebrities and public at building premieres and festivals.
THE FAÇADE: SCREEN AND TRANSPARENCY
LED technology allows us a very versatile
adaptation, both flat and warped surfaces, either integrated within a glass or
diluted in a mesh fabric. It also could
be tailored at the scale and visual effect, increasing or decreasing its
density according to the effect to be achieved.
Supposing those images are associated to some concepts, these should belong to the worlds of theater, movies, and icons of the most diverse and cosmopolitan locations, also to the world of dreams, as well as films as diverse as Blade Runner or Cabaret, spectacles of the magic and mystery along the history of movies.
The Pushkisky Cinema restored for muscovite people will be
a gift being surprisingly wrapped with a luxurious cellophane as those presents
that you feel a little bit sorry for opening them.
In this case is the
attraction of the wrapping and the intrigue to come in and see, what you feel,
so that those outside get not frustrated,
but they enjoy watching another show in a changing town in a new century.
